Blue Hawaii $3.85 Elvis Presley’s seventh film was the first of his “Hawaii trilogy” (including Girls! Girls! Girls! and Paradise, Hawaiian Style). While its story is daft–the King has just been released from his Army posting in Italy and returned to the islands, where he’s trying to avoid working in his father’s fruit business–the music is not: “Blue Hawaii,” “Almost Always True,” and the beautiful “Can’t Help F… |

Bubba Ho-Tep (Limited Collector’s Edition) $4.66 Don Coscarelli directs and Bruce Campbell stars as the King of Camp in this intentionally over-the-top schlockfest. We learn through narration and flashback how Elvis didn’t really die, ending up instead in … |

OK one last decade to cover – How do you rate these 50′s songs on a scale of 1 to 10?
1 – Johnny B Goode – Chuck Berry – one of the greatest Rock songs ever written in my opinion
2 – Whole Lotta Shakin Going On – Jerry Lee Lewis
3 – Long Tall Sally – Little Richard
4 – What’d I Say – Ray Charles
5 – Summertime Blues – Eddie Cochran
6 – Shake Rattle and Roll – Joe Turner
7 – Don’t Be Cruel – Elvis Presley
8 – Lawdy Miss Clawdy – Lloyd Price
9 – In The Still of The Night – Five Satins
10 – The Train Kept A Rollin – Johnny Burnette Trio
10′s across the board. Not one of those songs isn’t an excellent song in its own right, and not one song on the list failed to inspire other musicians. All of them have been covered about 100 times each, and almost any famous rocker of note has gone on record praising most of these songs in interviews. It would be an affront to history for me to dare give one a “9″.
That said, “In the Still of the Night” has to be one of the most gorgeous vocal numbers ever laid to wax. And I’m glad you included Joe Turner’s version of Shake Rattle and Roll instead of Bill Haley’s version (although Haley’s huge contributions to the history of rock are often overlooked in the US); it is the superior version.
Eddie Cochran is usually remembered for “Summertime Blues” but anyone reading this who likes guitar-based music could do worse than pick up an anthology; Cochran had the rawest guitar outside of Link Wray, but it didn’t always appear on the A-sides.
